Judge Orders DAPL Shutdown by August 5

Jul 6, 2020

A federal judge has ordered the shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline while a lengthy environmental review is conducted of the project opposed by Indian tribes.

The move was requested earlier by four Sioux tribes who claim the pipeline threatens tribal water supplies. The DAPL crossing in question is one of eight locations in North Dakota where crude oil pipelines cross under the Missouri River.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in a ruling filed Monday revoked a Corps of Engineers permit for the pipeline and ordered that "Dakota Access shall shut down the pipeline and empty it of oil by August 5, 2020."
