DOT Lifts Load Restrictions on State Highways

Mar 24, 2020

The North Dakota Department of Transportation has temporarily lifted seasonal load restrictions on all state highways to minimize disruption of the supply chain during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

The change is based on an executive order issued by Gov. Doug Burgum.

The DOT decision affects only state highways. It does not apply to interstate highways or any county, city or township roads.

Individual counties will make a decision whether to follow the DOT's lead or continue to restrict rural roads that are subject to damage as frost comes out of the ground. Oil industry truckers are advised to check with individual counties about restriction policies.

WDEA's road restriction map will be updated as county decisions are made.

Gov. Burgum's order provides DOT continuing authority to re-impose weight restrictions if it is determined that removal of the restriction is damaging a roadway or creating a safety risk.

Statewide seasonal load restriction information is available by calling 511 or online at www.dot.nd.gov/travel-info.
